Rudraksha in Ayurvedic medicine

Rudraksh is a tree distributed in different parts of India. Its hard tubercled nuts are made into rosaries and bracelets and are also used in making necklaces and buttons. There is considerable demand for the beads in India. Owing to limited occurrence of the species in the country, commercial supplies of these beads are not available form indigenous sources and the bulk of the requirement is met by imports from Nepal, Malaya and Indonesia. The rosaries are sold in India mostly at places of pilgrimage. As Rudraksh herb thrives in warm localities with a high and well-distributed rainfall, having good drainage. For the natives and traditional healers of Chhattisgarh, Rudraksh is not a new herb. They are aware of the nuts since time immemorial. In different forests of Chhattisgarh many Elaeocarpus species have been reported. Seeing its demand, now many innovative herb growers have started its plantation in Chhattisgarh. They are getting positive results from initial trials. The traditional healers of Chhattisgarh suggest the natives to wear the necklaces of Rudraksh in order to protect themselves from evil spirits. But as it is costly and beyond rich of common natives, this use is not much popular. In the name of Rudraksh, adulteration of inferior species is common. The healers informed me that they have other promising and cheap substitute to Rudraksh necklaces. I have given such details in my previous articles. The traditional healers are not much aware of its other medicinal properties and uses. During my ethnobotanical surveys in Chhattisgarh plains, I have observed its use in treatment of common fever. The healers rub the Rudraksh seed with Shahad (Honey) and give it to patients internally. It is promising remedy in hyper pyrexia. I am giving the details of its botany and reported medicinal uses, I have noted form the reference literatures. Botanically, Rudraksh (E. Sphaericus syn. E. ganitrus) is a medium sized evergreen tree with a spreading hand some crown leaves simple, oblong-lanceolate, sub-entire or irregularly crenate, decurrent into the petiole, glabrous, acute or acuminate; Flowers white in dense racemes in old leaf axills; Fruits globose or some what obovoid purple drupes, stone tubercled, longitudinally groved, generally 5- celled and 5 – seeded. Rarely seven – celled. The religious natives consider it lucky. According to Ayurveda, fruits are sour, appetiser, sedative and useful in treatment of cough, bronchitis, nerve pain, epilepsy, migraine etc. It is also considered beneficial in treatment of hypertension. Its use in treatment of high fever is not reported in these literatures. I am proud to write that the traditional healers of Chhattisgarh are using it for this purpose. I am trying to find out the fact that how these healers have discovered this promising use. After successful trials of Rudraksh plantation in Chhattisgarh, we will try to establish it as potential medicinal crop. Through the on-going surveys I am trying to gather more information on its traditional uses in Chhattisgarh Thank you very much for reading the article. Rudraksha recommended for various physical mental problems
| Rudraksha recommended for various physical mental problems | |||
| The ancient rudraksha beads are now gaining importance in the present era as the healing properties of rudraksha are being identified and recommended by rudraksha therapists for various physical and mental problems. Rudraksha beads (botanical name: Eleao Carpus Granitrus) are the dried fruits of the rudraksha tree mainly found in Java and Sumatra, Assam, Himalayan region, Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan.
Talking to this, Pune based Dr. Madhuri Mahadevan, a clairvoyant and a feng shui consultant who is also a rudraksha therapist says, “For thousands of years the merits and powers of the rudraksha beads have been documented and detailed in the holy puranas and Upanishads.” According to Dr. Madhuri wearing the sacred rudraksha beads brings one to the alpha state of present moment living. “The ancient discipline of Rudraksha recommendation is as simple as it is complicated,” Dr. Madhuri points out. She further states today there are many rudraksha therapy facilities in India that recommend rudraksha beads by combining ancient Vedic Knowledge with modern scientific proof and confirmed experiences continually proving the effectiveness of wearing rudraksha beads. Stressing on the scientific aspect of the Beads she firmly puts modern science has shown that the electromagnetic nature of rudraksha beads affect our neurophysiology in a specific manner that allows control of heart beat, blood pressure, stress levels, hypertension and at the same time relieves anxiety, depression and neurotic conditions. Anti aging properties have also been discovered, based on the natural electromagnetism of rudraksha beads. She calls rudraksha as a natures gift to mankind and a panacea for all illnesses coming in the category of using herbs and plants for counteracting not only the evil effects of planets but all at clinical level for illnesses such as hypertension, cancer and AIDS amongst others. As a rudraksha therapist and a clairvoyant Dr. Madhuri have also suggested the usage of rudraksha beads to her several clients suffering from cancer and AIDS. Says she, “I recommend the usage of rudraksha beads, externally by wearing it and internally by drinking milk of rudraksha beads boiled in it.” She adds these Beads tremendously help as a supportive therapy and nullifies all the side effects of the medication and speed up the effect of the medication. The wearing of Beads also gives strength to the patient to cope with the medication. However, Dr. Madhuri stresses on the need of more scientific research and analysis to be carried out to understand its benefits in the field of health and medicine for the benefit of a mankind. Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad / Article by Sri Swami Sivananda
| Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad | |||
|
“Lord Siva and His Worship” by Sri Swami Sivananda, founder of the Divine Life Society.
Hari Om! I praise the Effulgent State of Absolute Peace, belonging to Sri Maharudra, which is to be known through the Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad. Bhusunda questioned Lord Kalagnirudra: What is the beginning of Rudraksha beads? What is the benefit of wearing them on the body? Lord Kalagnirudra answered him thus: I closed my eyes for the sake of destroying the Tripura Asuras. From my eyes thus closed, drops of water fell on the earth. These drops of tears turned into Rudrakshas. By the mere utterance of the name of ‘Rudraksha’, one acquires the benefit of giving ten cows in charity. By seeing and touching it, one attains double that benefit. I am unable to praise it any more. I closed my eyes one thousand celestial years. Then from my eyelids, drops of water dropped down and attained the state of immobility for blessing the devoted persons. This Rudraksha destroys the devotees’ sins that are committed both night and day, by wearing it. By mere vision of the Rudraksha, the benefit will be say, a lac. But by wearing them, it will be a crore. Why, it will be equal to hundred crores. But it will be a thousand lacs of crores and hundred lacs of crores times powerful when one does Japa with Rudraksha and wears it at all times. Among Rudrakshas, one as big as Amalaka (myrobalan), is considered to be the best. One as big as the Badari fruit (Indian berry) is considered to be of the middle sort. But that as big as Chana (Bengal gram) is considered to be the worst of all. This is my idea about the size of Rudraksha beads. The four kinds of people, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas and Sudras are born as merely a worthless burden on the earth. The real Brahmin is the white Rudraksha. The red is a Kshatriya. The yellow is a Vaisya. And the black is a Sudra. Therefore, a Brahmin should wear white Rudrakshas, a Kshatriya the red, a Vaisya the yellow and a Sudra the black. One should use those Rudraksha-beads which are nice, handsome, strong, big, auspicious and thorny. One should avoid those eaten by worms, broken, without thorns, and having sores. The self-holed Rudraksha is of the best variety. But that which is holed by man’s attempt, is considered to be worse. Those best Rudrakshas should be strung in white thread. A worshipper of Siva should wear Rudraksha all over the body. He should wear one bead on the crest, three hundred round the head, thirty-six round the neck, sixteen round each arm, twelve round the chest and five hundred round the waist. He should wear a Yajnopavita consisting of one hundred and eight beads of Rudrakshas. He should wear two, three, five or seven Malas of Rudraksha round the neck. A Siva-Bhakta should wear Rudrakshas round his crown, ear-ring, chain, round the ear, armlet, at all times, and specially round the stomach, irrespective of the fact whether he is sleeping, drinking, etc. If the devotee wears three hundred beads, it is the worst, if he wears five hundred it will be medium, but one thousand will be the best of all. The devotee, when wearing Rudrakshas on the head, should repeat his Ishta Mantra, and when wearing them round the neck, should repeat the Tat-Purusha Mantra and when wearing round the throat, should repeat the Aghora Mantra. The same Mantra (Aghora) should be recited when wearing round the chest also. He should wear them round the arms with the Aghora Bija Mantra. Then again Bhusunda asked Lord Kalagnirudra: What are the different forms and effects of Rudraksha beads? Please tell me about the secret of these blessed ones including their various faces, which is the means of getting rid of all evil. Lord Kalagnirudra said: The bead with one face is of the form of the Supreme Truth. A disciplined one (controlling his senses) mingles himself with the one Eternal Truth, after wearing these Rudrakshas. (The following is a list of different faces of Rudrakshas and their effects). Faces Form- Effect of wearing 1. Supreme Truth- Attainment of Eternity 2. Ardhanarisvara- Grace of Ardhanarisvara 3. Tretagni- Grace of Agni 4. Brahma- Grace of Brahma 5. Pancha-Brahmas -Destruction of homicide sin 6. Karttikeya or Ganesa -Attainment of Chitta-Suddhi and Jnana 7. Saptamala -Attainment of good health and wealth 8. Ashtamatras (Ashta Vasus) or Ganga -Grace of these Devatas and becoming truthful 9. Nava-Saktis -Grace of Nava-Saktis or nine Powers 10. Yama -Attainment of Peace. 11. Ekadasa Rudras -Increase of all kinds of wealth 12. Mahavishnu or 12 Adityas -Attainment of Moksha 13. Cupid -Attainment of fulfilling desires and grace of Cupid 14. Rudra -Destruction of all diseases By wearing Rudrakshas during eclipses, Vishusankranti (the end of Mina and beginning of Mesha Masa), new moon, full moon and other such auspicious days, one is freed of all sins. The base of the Rudraksha bead is Brahma, its navel is Vishnu, its face is Rudra and its hole consists of all gods. One day Sanatkumara asked Kalagnirudra: “O Lord! Tell me the rules for wearing Rudrakshas”. At that time Nidagha, Jadabharata, Dattatreya, Katyayana, Bharadvaja, Kapila, Vasishtha, Pippalada, etc., came to Kalagnirudra. Then Lord Kalagnirudra asked them why they all had come in a group. They all answered that they came to hear the method of wearing Rudrakshas. Kalagnirudra said: • Those that are born out of Rudra’s Akshis (eyes) are called Rudrakshas. When these beads are even once touched by hand, one attains the glory of giving in charity two thousand cows at a time. • When they are worn in ears, he gets the effect of giving out eleven thousand cows in charity. He also attains the state of the eleven Rudras. • When the beads are worn on the head, one has the benefit of giving a crore of cows in charity. Of all these places, I am unable to tell you the benefit when worn in the ears. • Whoever studies this Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad, be he a boy or a youth, becomes great. He becomes the Guru of all and the teacher of all Mantras. Havan and Archana should be done with these Mantras (of the Upanishad). • That Brahmin who recites this Upanishad in the evening, destroys the sins committed during day time; who recites at noon, destroys the sins of six births; who recites in the morning and evening, destroys the sins of many births. He attains the same benefit of doing six thousand lacs of Gayatri Japa. • He becomes purified from all sins of killing a Brahmin, drinking toddy, stealing gold, approaching Guru’s wife, having intercourse with her, speaking with corrupted person, etc. He gets the benefits of all pilgrimages and river- baths. He attains Siva-sayujya. He does not come back (to rebirth). (Translation taken from lordsiva.pdf) |

Some of the most Beautiful Mantras for the Holy Rudraksha are found in the Padma Purana Chapter 57
The Lord Spoke: O Kartikeya hear correctly about the assignment and wearing of Rudrakshas of different numbers of mouths. The merits already told are had without the recital of a sacred hymn. The merits and the importance of the person who on the earth wears it to the accompaniment of a sacred hymn cannot be told: Aum Rudra ekavaktrasya Aum Kham dvivaktrasya Aum Ambum trivaktrasya Aum Hrim caturvaktrasya Aum Hram pancavaktrasya Aum Hrum Sadvaktrasya Aum Hrah Saptavaktrasya Aum Kam astavaktrasya Aum Jum navavaktrasya Aum Aksam dasavaktrasya Aum Srim ekadasavaktrasya Aum Hrim Dvadasavaktrasya Aum Ksom trayodasavaktrasya Aum Nram caturdasavaktrasya A person becomes equal to me by wearing Rudraksas of all mouths (ie. by wearing Rudraksha having any number of mouths) Therefore O Son with all effort wear a Rudraksha. About Goddess Durga
About Goddess Durga
|
||
Durga, in Sanskrit means “She who is incomprehensible or difficult to reach.” Goddess Durga is a form of Sakti worshiped for her gracious as well as terrifying aspect. Mother of the Universe, she represents the infinite power of the universe and is a symbol of a female dynamism. The manifestation of Goddess Durga is said to emerge from Her formless essence and the two are inseparable.
She is also called by many other names, such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali. In the form of Parvati, She is known as the divine spouse of Lord Shiva and is the mother of Her two sons, Ganesha and Karttikeya, and daughter Jyoti. Destroyer of demons, she is worshiped during an annual festival called Durga puja, especially popular among Bengalis.
Her Appearance
There are endless aspects of Durga described in the Puranas and Agamas and the iconography is consequently very varied. She is usually pictured as having ten arms holding Sword, Conch, Discus, Rosary, Bell, Winecup, Shielf, Bow, Arrow, and Spear. She is most often shown riding a lion from which comes Her august name, Simhavahini, “She who stands astride the king of beasts”. She is gorgeously dressed in royal red cloth and has several ornaments decorating Her personage. Her hair is dressed up in a crown (karandamukuta) which then flows out in long luxuriant tresses that are darkly luminous and soothing to the eye. The various tools reflects the eminent supremacy that helps in controling the universe and obey Her will.
Weilding Energy
Goddess Durga exists eternally, always abiding in her own sweet nature and inhabits the hearts and minds of her ecstatic devotees. As Shakti power, she shapes, nurtures, and dissolves names and forms, while as subtle spiritual energy called Kundalini, She lights the lotuses fo the seven centres of awareness in the sacred human body. Goddess Durga killed the powerful demon Mahish and all his great commanders. When demonic forces create imbalance all god unite becoming one divine force called Shakti or Durga.

Chamundeswari Temple
Chamundeswari Temple is located on the top of Chamundi Hills about 13 km from the palace city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka in India. The temple was named after Chamundeeswari or Durga, the fierce form of Shakti, a tutelary deity held in reverence for centuries by Mysore Maharajas.
Description
The original shrine is thought to have been built in the 12th century by Hoysala rulers while its tower was probably built by the Vijayanagar rulers of the 17th century. In 1659, a flight of one thousand steps was built leading up to the 3000 foot summit of the hill.[1]
At the temple are several images of Nandi (the bull mount of Shiva). There is a huge granite Nandi on the 800th step on the hill in front of a small Shiva temple a short distance away. This Nandi is over 15 feet high, and 24 feet long and around its neck are exquisite bells.[2]
The temple has a seven story tall ‘gopuram‘ decorated with intricate carvings. The idol of the Chamunda Devi is said to be made of solid gold and the temple gates are made of silver. [3]

Pitara Tarpan Part Three
Pitara Tarpan Part Three
13 Nov 2008 sent by Hiroko to RBSC:

Namaste.
I did tarpan for ancestor at mahalaya new moon(28th September) on
this year.
From this acting,My life is changing little by little.
I ask for Brahmana at Special pandit at Kerala.
Your dead ancestors are governing your destiny. The greatest
contribution of India to the world is her spiritual science. No
civilization, however old it is, has ever attained the level of
sophistication reached by the yogis and siddhas of India. The yogis
and siddhas paid equal attention to the bodily existence while one is
alive and also the disembodied existence after one dies. They also
had knowledge of soul travel while still in embodiment. Sometimes
they left their body in a safe place in a cave and entered another
body. At other times they turned the body into light and disappeared.
Once having disappeared they could momentarily assume a human body
like an old man or a boy and return to the earth plane for a few
hours visit. There are many places in Southern India, like
Thiruvanamallai, Koli Hills and Kutralam where these siddhas hang out
in the subtle forms. If you are destined to meet them at those places
they will show up and bless you.
Siddhas have a special relationship with the earth plane. They are
constantly involved in making the earth plane a better place for the
souls who come to inhabit the earth. The siddhas are the source for
medicine, astrology, alchemy, yoga, rituals for worshiping different
deities for different purposes, etc. Siddhas emphasize that the most
important element in human life is the destiny of the individual
soul. Every soul has its own unique destiny. Every soul has its own
biological and spiritual baggage attached to it. How you look, what
diseases you will have are localized within the genes that the soul
creates. But the soul lives simultaneously as spirit existence as
well. In other words you have the biological existence defined by the
material body as well as a spiritual existence defined by the
invisible spirit. The soul living in the physical and non-physical
existence governs your destiny.
The siddhas contribution to the spirit existence of the soul is
amazing. When a person dies he takes with him all old good and bad
thought forms and experiences that he had while alive. If someone had
been a real bad person his soul starts the torture experience right
after death. If one had lived a luxurious life, committing all kinds
of crimes, that person will have the worst type of shadow existence.
This life in shadow form after death invariably is a troublesome
experience. The most intriguing thing is that there are a host of
your ancestors who are in shadow forms and hanging in the mid-air.
Some of them because of their evil nature are hanging upside down.
This pain experienced the ancestors spirits directly affects your
destiny while you are on the earth plane. Logically it doesnft make
sense that you should suffer for some misdoings of your great, great
grandfather. But the siddhas claim this is soul genetics. You are
your ancestor both biologically and spirit-ually.
I have been returning to this earth plane to find ways and means to
remove pain and sorrow for the human beings. In this life I am
convinced that until you clean the souls of your ancestors, you are
not going to free yourself from suffering. I have a vacuum cleaner
that can cleanse the souls of your grandfather, grandmother or your
great, great grandfather. The vacuum cleaner is called Tarpanam.
Tarpanam means food offering for the ancestors. During the new moon
day these departed spirits come to the earth plane at dawn and leaves
during sunset. They do in fact hang out with you or with your brother
or sister or any other relative. The Siddhas reveal that even your
enemies in your current life, are your reincarnated ancestors for
whom you did not tarpanam. You can feed them with black sesame seeds,
rice and water. This simple act will help change your destiny. It
gives me immense joy to share this knowledge with you.
Although you can do the tarpanam yourself, I recommend that you do it
with the help of a specialist in Kerala. The Kerala priests are adept
in tarpanam. They literally talk to the dead spirits to see that they
are satisfied and are ready to move to the next stage leaving their
shadow existence. A good tarpanam specialist can give you the right
feedback of tarpranam offerings.
http://www.astroved.com/services/Misc.asp?Content=tarpanam
Two simple practices that everyone can do on a daily basis are:
(1) After taking morning shower, cut up a small amount of ginger
root, dip the pieces in honey and eat them, inwardly offering them to
the ancestors. The combination of the ginger and honey helps enliven
the DNA.
(2) Offer tarpanam (rice or rice flour along with black sesame seeds)
in your hand and wet it with water. Minimally, this can be done with
black sesame seeds and rice alone.
Holding the tarpanam in your hand, offer it to 3 generations of
ancestors on your mothers line (mother is 1 (if she is not alive),
grandmother 2, etc.) and 6 generations of ancestors up your fathers
line. Say to the ancestors, Come and take this offering and be at
peace. Ask the ancestors for their blessings and ask that the
blessings come to you now. Just as you have inherited some soul
conditionings from your family, so your prayers can reach them and
alter their patterns in a positive way. Begin with 3 generations and
work your way up to doing this practice for 12 generations. This is
also performed very powerfully in community or family.
Note: You can call the names of your ancestors whom you remember, may
be upto 3 generations. On daily tarpan, you have to use the fresh
rice and seasame seeds everyday.
After doing the above, the water, seasame, rice flour finally after
seeking the blessings, Please pour the water on a well or in a river
or in Sea or drain it.
